Each natural wood case is cut and created by a Japanese craftsman to enchance the acoustical capacity of your iPhone

  • Each natural wood case is cut and created by a Japanese craftsman
  • Fashioned from high-grade white ash wood often reserved for high end/valuable musical instruments.
  • Specialized high-tech material designed inside the case prevents degration to the sound quality and omits ambient noise.
  • Vibration suppression is achieved with 3D shaped three-prong supporting points.
  • Engineered with supervision from DJ SWING and his sound mastering studio, Crystal Sound, known for their passion to delivering high quality audio.

Evolutionalize the true acoustical capacity of your iPhone

Hibiki is the only technically-advanced wooden case to market capable of honing the sound through the reduction of ambient noise from the device.

The popularization of the iPhone made the device almost the default music listening device, able to provide hours of music at the palm of your hand.

Among users are those who put an emphasis on sound quality - finding ways such as acquiring high-end earphones, headphones or using Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC) - to achieve the best sound quality out of the iPhone.

Since iPhones receive and emit a large amount of radiowaves sent via 3G, LTE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, the radiowaves also deteriorate sound quality when they are transferred through the small headphone amplifier.

Separate portable headphone amplifiers have been used to resolve the matter but they require batteries and can be inconvenient to carry around.

The Hibiki case uses a high-tech material, “PULSHUT MU”, attached to the backside of the case that reduces non-audio signal wave noise.

In addition, the use of high-grade white ash wood is ideal for optimum sound quality. Combined with three 3D-shaped supporting points which suppress vibration, there is less distortion and a greater amount of the true sound is emitted.

Loyalty to wood material

Engineered with supervision from DJ SWING and his sound mastering studio, Crystal Sound, known for their passion to delivering high quality audio.

Since sound can change dramatically depending on the wood selected, strict trial listening was conducted. White ash, which is native to North America and often reserved for high end musical instruments, was adopted out of many wood options for its ability to produce the closest original sound.

Although ebony and cherry are famous for their beautiful grains or color, the priority for better sound quality made white ash the clear choice.

Vibration suppression with three, 3D shaped supporting points

You will notice three projections on the backside of Hibiki upon close examination. These 3D-shaped supporting points provide a stabilizing platform that can suppress vibration that might cause sound quality to deteriorate.

Natural wood is far more delicate to work for fine details than plastics or aluminum due to its smaller density, but the Matsuba Factory made it possible.

Asahi-Kasei Fibers Corporation’s “PULSHUT MU” omits noise that caused degration to the quality of sound.

The iPhone generates a large amount of radiowaves from an antenna on the backside of the phone for 3G, LTE, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi communications as well as some noise from the inner substrate and LED for normal operations.

These small jittery noises cause deterioration of sound quality as the audio travels through the headphone amplifier.

Hibiki chose the “PULSHUT MU” from Asahi Kasei Fibers Corporation, a favorite of professional high-end audio equipment, to remove the radiated or transmissive noise, effectively improving the sound quality.

DJ SWING’s trial listening resulted in double-usage of the “Pulshut MU” and led to removing even more ambient noise without losing musical elements. “PULSHUT MU” does not rely on batteries similar to a portable headphone amplifier and the effectiveness lasts almost permanently.

High-quality craftsmanship

The project started with the concept of using 100% natural wood as the basis for improving the sound quality. However, cutting/carving something as small as an iPhone case with fine details can be a challenge.

Hibiki is produced in Hiroshima by the highly regarded Matsuba factory where each case is made by a craftsman. Each craftsman with specialized skill sets is able to transform a single piece of wood into the case, while also creating the highly detailed 3D-shaped supporting points for vibration suppression as well as meticulous work around the buttons.

For this reason, repairs to a damaged case should be and are available by the craftsman from the Matsuba factory.

*The cost for repair would depend on the level of damage and may be charged to the customer. Some damage may be unrepairable.

About the Matsuba Factory

The Matsuba Factory, located in the Hiroshima Prefecture of Fuchu City- the town of craftsmanship- has been in operation for approximately 70 years. Skilled craftsmen with 40-50 years of industry-specific experience work here.

Wooden mold casting of automobile engine parts make up the majority of the Matsuba Factory’s current projects. The need for quality, accurate work is imperative for proper casting. The measurements require precision within 0.01 milimeters.

The instigator of the Matsuba Factory’s foray into making iPhone cases came from a casual request from one of the relatives (of Matsuba Factory) asking, “Since you’re capable in precision wood cutting work, why not try to make an iPhone case?”

As a result, Matsuba Factory’s original iPhone cases, kitchen and interior goods were created and then “Hibiki” was born.

Matsuba Factory Mr. Hirokazu Matsuba

Finding a cutting device capable of capturing the elegant intricacies of the minute elevational details/lines was the most challenging part of producing Hibiki.

Additionally, it takes 1,000 cuts to make a single case and the cutlery needs time consuming sharpening. For the large-scale production of the case, this was not efficient, until I was able to find replaceable blades.

I struggled to figure out how to cut, fasten and move through the production of such a complicated design. At one point, I dug too far and made a hole during production as we attempted to thin out the case a much as possible from both the inside and outside while trying to maintain the case fidelity.

Furthermore, the old machine used to create the design requires a full day of programming to create a single cut point. The Hibiki design is complicated with many cut points which translated into and a large investment of time.

I finally was able to get to the current design after multiple prototypes and getting advice from my veteran craftsman father on how to overcome distortion of the wood due to dryness.

The production time from the start of the wood cutting is six months. When considering the time to dry the case, we are only able to work on one case out of every three days throughout the production time.

The charm of wood is in both its beauty as a natural material with its ‘warmth’ but for me, wood is much ‘cooler’ than what we normally think what it can do and show.

In the wooden mold industry, it is normal to design with curves and avoid edge deficits. I never thought that I could make a product with a difficult precision design, such as 3D shaping with differences in elevation and an emphasis on lines and edges.

It took many trials, but I discovered one can create and make a very cool case out of wood.

FAQ

  • Can I use this case with a protector film? Please do not attach the thing covered edge of the phone, thick glass film/protector, and the film or seat on the backside. It causes damage to the lower fitting, and lessens the effect for the sound quality.
